Sourena Sefati, composer and Persian Santour player was born in 1977 in Ramsar, Iran. He received his bachelor’s degree in music from University of Tehran in 2002 and master’s degree in Iranian Music Performance from Art University in 2009. He won the award for the best composer of Iranian music from Art University in 2006. He taught Persian music at Art University of Tehran and Elmi-Karbordi University from 2008 to 2014. In 2016, Sefati won the award for the best composers for the album From Deceitful Ages from 17th Iran House of Music Celebration. Sourena is the author of book “Dorrab - One hundred seventeen etudes for Santour” which was published by Khonyagar publication in 2014. He was soloist at Iran Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, Iranian Chamber Orchestra, and Mehrnavazan National Orchestra, and Sepid-o Siah music band. Sourena moved to the United States in 2014. Sefati and Rahim AlHaj established a trio (Oud, Santour, and Percussion) in 2016 and performed the Middle Eastern music in the US and several countries. In 2017, Sefati organized Alborz Trio (Santour, Flute, and Percussion) to present Persian old and contemporary music. He released his album The Sound of Peace (Santour & Persian Percussion) in 2018. He Established NuAeen Ensemble with Mojgan Shajarian (vocalist) and Pejman Hadadi (Percussionist) in 2018 and performed several concerts in the United States and Canada. Sefati released his last album Arghavan with Mojgan Shajarian in 2019. Santour Santour, which is one of the oldest musical instruments, was invented and developed in the area of Iran and parts of Mesopotamia. Santour is a string hammered trapezoidal instrument which is made of wood and is beaten with two light wooden hammers called Mezrab. It has two sets of nine bridges, providing a range of three octaves (E3-F6). There are four strings in a same pitch for each bridge and totally, there are 72 strings for all bridges. The strings in the right position are made of brass or copper and the strings in the middle and left position are made of steel alloy.
