Description: Easter is a time of sacred thoughts. We are particularly conscious of the sacred meaning of each life. The Consecration of the House is a beautiful work by Beethoven. It is not written for Easter at all, but for the opening of a theatre, and the drama of plays to be presented. We think it is appropriate for the drama of Easter. s Beethoven's overture The Consecration of the House was written along with a chorus, Wo sich die Pulse, for the opening night of the Josephstadt Theatre in Venice on 3 October 1822. Its name is taken from the play it preceded at the first performance. Towards the end of his life Beethoven became increasingly interested in the strict counterpoint of Palestrina, Bach and Handel. The influence of Handel is particularly apparent in the final section of this overture which takes the form of a double-fugue. Other parts of the overture are reminiscent of the Ninth Symphony Beethoven was composing at the time. Although not as well known as some of his other overtures, The Consecration of the House is a fine example of Beethoven's late style.
