Description: We think of Beethoven as the great architect. We think that during his long years of deafness he composed away from the piano, hearing these great musical structures in his inner ear. But no. When his hearing was only mildly impaired, he would use ear trumpets to compose at the piano. He would also use a wooden stick between his teeth to feel the vibrations when he played. The higher frequencies are present in his later works again. By this time he was completely deaf and he was only able to imagine the sound of the composition. But he still made sure that he composed at the piano. He was known as a virtuoso improviser when he moved to Vienna in 1792, and his hands had a wonderful feeling for the geography of the keyboard. He needed the piano to compose. He did not just compose in his head. Similarly, Chopin always needed a piano physically in the room to compose. When he went to stay with George Sand at her country house, frequently the piano had not arrived. He was grow impatient waiting for his piano, made by Pleyel, to arrive. He had manuscript paper, but he did not compose until the piano arrived. It strikes me as a point of fascination that these towering figures needed to get their hands on a keyboard, and hear the inflections of actual piano sound in order to compose. They did not just compose in their minds. It was a physical imperative to have a piano in the room.
