Description
The organ is one of the oldest keyboard instruments in the world. From the earliest times paintings in Europe featured organs as the instrument which joined society, which led society, which inspired singing and devotion. The celebratory nature of the organ is the result of a building a complex musical machine which developed to gigantic proportions over the centuries. Frequently organs sported thousands of pipes, and in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries featuring up to seven keyboards to control the sound within all that machinery. Large they may be, but intimate sounds are also a hallmark of organ music. Bach in his youth was commissioned to become part of the management team for the building of organs in several cities near his birthplace of Eisenach. He was very demanding. He knew how the action worked, which was a series of wooden levers from the key to the pipe. The action caused a valve below the pipe to open, and then the wind from the bellows rushed into the pipe, and it sounded. This was called a tracker action, and the high precision parts allowed air into the pipes exactly as the movement of fingers on the keys required. We have some varied recordings here, with the festival celebratory sound of organs. We have the intimate sounds of Messiaen with his deep and profound religious music in the mid 20th century. He had survived the horrors of the Second World War, and saw depths of feeling and despair few will encounter. We also feature something for children, the Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens in the original French narration. A pure celebratory joy. And that is followed by a Fugue which Bach constructed as a joyous thought fpr the organist about the pleasure derived from a very disciplined Fugal structure. Within the confines of the Fugue the emotional outpouring of pleasure in the sound of the celebratory organ produces abundant happiness.
