Description: The pleasure of listening to a Fugue is really transcendent. It is astonishing how the technology of the voice leading leads to creativity, and then that creativity can lead to the deepest feelings. Most people are aware that a Fugue is a piece where the same melody is used in different voices. Usually up to three or four voices. Bach at the end of his life wrote a Ricercar in six parts, six voices intertwining, and his consummate skill made it possible for a single keyboard artist to play the six parts with just two hands. An exceptional inspiration. We have Fugues from around the world, mainly European composers, to be sure. Mozart, Chopin and Beethoven were influenced by the Fugues of Bach. Beethoven introduced a fugue as the development section in his piano sonatas and string quartets. There are stunning Fugue sections in his A Major Sonata, Op. 101. The key to listening to a Fugue is this. Be relaxed. Eliminate the material world and feel the energy of your life within. Then with a light concentration, let the fugue theme enter your being. Each fugue theme has complex ideas within it. These ideas may not be apparent to you, but the composer has discovered them. Let the composer unfold the ideas contained within the theme as the countersubjects are woven around the theme. The key may change, the figurations may change, the fugue theme may be inverted (played upside down) or may be played in reverse. You do not need to even know what is going on technically. All you need to bring is your own focused and relaxed listening. Let the Fugue gradually speak to you and reveal its wonders. Life will unfold like a flower in spring.
