Sturm und Drang - Rumblings in the Distance

Description
Often referred to using the literary term 'Sturm und Drang' (Storm and Stress), many works from this period between the late 1760s and early 1780s years display a remarkably expressive language, though there is no relation to the literary movement. The Symphony No. 44 opens with a strong unison statement that sets the mood for the rest of this turbulent movement. The nickname 'Trauer' (Mourning) applies to the sublime adagio, played at a Berlin memorial concert in 1809, the year of Haydn's death. A furious diabolical presto ends the symphony in rousing fashion. The Symphony No. 45 dates from 1772 and is in the extremely rare key of F sharp minor. The Eszterhaza blacksmiths were even forced to create new crooks for the horns so they could play in this unusual key! The Symphony's opening movement is certainly a stormy affair with its insistent syncopation and strong falling phrases. Enjoy this playlist uniting 2 symphonies and their movements.
