Description: Often referred to using the literary term 'Sturm und Drang' (Storm and Stress), many works from this period between the late 1760s and early 1780s years display a remarkably expressive language, though there is no relation to the literary movement. The Symphony No. 44 opens with a strong unison statement that sets the mood for the rest of this turbulent movement. The nickname 'Trauer' (Mourning) applies to the sublime adagio, played at a Berlin memorial concert in 1809, the year of Haydn's death. A furious diabolical presto ends the symphony in rousing fashion. The Symphony No. 45 dates from 1772 and is in the extremely rare key of F sharp minor. The Eszterhaza blacksmiths were even forced to create new crooks for the horns so they could play in this unusual key! The Symphony's opening movement is certainly a stormy affair with its insistent syncopation and strong falling phrases. Enjoy this playlist uniting 2 symphonies and their movements.
