Description
MP presents two internationally acclaimed pianists - the Italian Stefano Greco and the Argentine Alberto Portugheis - performing the Sinfonía Concertante by Dinu Lipatti, the great Romanian pianist and composer whose life was tragically cut short by Hodgkin's Disease at the age of 33. Also included on this CD is a recording of Bach's Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring which is integral to the life of Lipatti as it was the first and final work that the pianist played in front of an audience. Alberto Portugheis has lived in London for the last 40 years giving concerts - Lipatti's compositions are frequently found in the Portugheis concert programmes. This album offers to us the opportunity of listening the music of Dinu Lipatti played by one of his biggest admirers.

                  Dinu Lipatti Nocturne

Dedicated to Clara Haskill. The Nocturne in F Sharp Minor (25th April 1939) is the only one among his 'French' Nocturnes. It is a special work with dense writing, rigorous construction and rich in harmony. It is based on several sound levels and uses an independent rhythmical ostinato, producing a neoclassical French atmosphere in the style of Faure. Its complex and refined polyphonic thread demands from the performer a total control of finger movement that illustrates Lipatti's pianistic ideal perfectly. 'The independence of finger attach, touch and timbre in each hand'. First performance: Bucharest, December 16, 1939. Piano: Dinu Lipatti Editions Salabert, Paris, 1961 (E. A. S. 16644) From the nocturnes composed in 1939, only this one, in F sharp minor, is known. As evidenced in letters and program notes, Lipatti wrote several nocturnes and often played three of them as a group.
