Through depicting precious characteristics regarding plum blossom’s pure color, fragrance and cold tolerance, the music borrows objects to express the feelings to praise people with noble morals.

The melody of "Guangling Verse" is passionate and generous. It is the only piece of guqin music during ancient China period that has the atmosphere of fighting and rebellion. It directly expresses the spirit of revenge and has a high ideological and artistic value.

According to legend, it is a work in the Spring and Autumn Period of ancient China. The music depicts the natural scene of torrential rivers and seas, expressing the praise and love of China's rivers and mountains.

At the time when the Yuan (元) army invaded Zhejiang, Guo Mian, composer of this piece, who lost his country and homeland in Zhejiang, moved to the vicinity of Heng Mountain (衡山) in Hunan (湖南). He used to go boating at the confluence of Xiao river and Xiang river. Since Jiuyi Mountain (九嶷山) was the representative of the "wise and able" at that time, every time when Guo looked at Jiuyi Mountain covered by clouds and blocked by water, his feelings were touched by the scenery, the sadness and depression were intertwined.
