Description
One of our new Performers, André Gaio Pereira has a love for the guitar in his native Portugal. One of his most recent projects involves his own arrangements of music for the Portuguese guitar by Carlos Paredes. He gave the first performances of these in the last edition of Setúbal Music Festival. He has captured the life of a plucked instrument, and translated it into beautiful themes for the violin. The concept of arranging music for different instruments has a long history, of course. Music was played in different formats since the times of the troubadors. One famous arrangement is the Bach Chaconne for solo violin. It was arranged for piano by Ferrucio Busoni. Chaconne, Italian Ciaccona, solo instrumental piece that forms the fifth and final movement of the Partita No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004, by Johann Sebastian Bach. Written for solo violin, the Chaconne is one of the longest and most challenging entirely solo pieces ever composed for that instrument. Bach gradually increases the complexity of his theme, mixing in various compositional effects. Some twists upon the theme are spacious and grand; others flow nimbly. Fast runs and large interval skips are frequent, requiring much dexterity from the performer. Bach also calls forth changes in emotional intensity, as some variations are dominated by long notes and others by many, more urgent short notes. Ferruccio Busoni was an Italian composer, pianist, conductor, editor, writer, and teacher. He attracted large audiences as a solo pianist. He also wrote transcriptions of Bach. These transcriptions go beyond literal reproduction of the music for piano and often involve substantial recreation, although never straying from the original rhythmic outlines, melody notes and harmony. This is in line with Busoni's own concept that the performing artist should be free to intuit and communicate his divination of the composer's intentions. Here you can hear the Violin Chaconne transcribed for solo piano in a truly imaginative recreation of the emotions. We also have a solo Bach Violin Sonata, performed by Oscar Bohórquez. His splendid technique, his musical profoundness and his charisma are very special’ described Christoph Eschenbach, Music Director of the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin, the rising German violinist.
